Excursion to Casa Madsen in Argentine Patagonia

Argentine Patagonia is a dream destination for nature lovers and outdoor adventure enthusiasts. For those who have already appreciated its breathtaking scenery, there is Casa Madsen, the home of pioneer Andreas Madsen, a Dane who arrived in 1905 to collaborate with Perito Pascasio Moreno and built the first house in El Chaltén.

This house offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in part of the history of the region and enjoy a guided tour, learn about the pioneer’s journeys to El Chalten, Santa Cruz and understand what daily life was like on the Estancia more than a hundred years ago.

Discovering Casa Madsen

To visit Casa Madsen it is necessary to book the tour. When you do so, the agency will send you the necessary directions to get to the area. Approximately the duration of the visit to the Estancia is 1:30hs, which includes tea service with hot drinks and sweet pastries (please inform the service provider in case you have any dietary restrictions). The visits are guided in both Spanish and English.

The house, located on the other side of the De las Vueltas River, right in front of the actual town of El Chaltén, offers an unbeatable view of Cerro Fitz Roy. Nothing is by chance, Andreas chose that place for a good reason!

Part of the visit will be inside the Madsen House, but there will be times when visitors will learn details of the construction of the house and will be outdoors, as well as, after a few minutes walk, they will visit the family cemetery.

Tips for Visitors:

  • Punctuality. During the visit to Casa Madsen, you will be immersed in history and it is necessary to arrive on time so as not to miss the details from the beginning.

How to get there?

The Casa Madsen Museum is located approximately 1.4km from the center of the town of El Chalten. Walking will take you about 30 minutes with unbeatable views of Mount Fitz Roy. For those who prefer not to walk, it will take about 10 minutes on a gravel road.

In case you do not have your own mobility, we recommend you to book your transportation in advance since there is no internet connection or telephone service in the area.

Undoubtedly, it is a highly recommended visit for those who have already hiked the trails of El Chalten and want to know the town from its history.

An excellent option to do with family, friends or alone!
